Redevelopment of Elm Street:Lorne to Paris
Elm Street is an historic main street in the City of Greater Sudbury and has been a major thoroughfare for the region for over a century. Decades ago a south-west bypass was constructed and it was hoped that this would diminish heavy vehicular traffic in the downtown core. This has not been the case. Today many buildings, most of them significant heritage buildings, remain vacant due to heavy traffic volumes and lack of available parking. Daily volume exceeds 30,000 vehicles. This heavy traffic corridor is a threat to the ongoing revitalization efforts in the core. Several buildings present opportunities for residential conversion projects as well as new commercial and retail spaces if this situation is reversed.
Downtown Village Development Corporation is strongly advocating that the redevelopment of Elm Street become an identified priority project in the new Downtown Master Plan. Reducing the number of traffic lanes and creating on-street parking are paramount along with the creation of cycling lanes and the addition of landscape elements such as trees and public art.
