Downtown Streetscape Petition
In September 2008, Greater Sudbury’s City Council passed a resolution supporting the Downtown Sudbury Streetscape Project: Phase 2 Site Amenity Design Specifications and Costing Report. The Downtown Streetscape Project includes amenity improvements such as new street lights, the installation of benches and bike racks, public art, trees, and generally making the downtown more pedestrian friendly. At that time, City Council confirmed their partnership in the Downtown Streetscape Project and their long-term commitment to ensure the project’s implementation over a phased process. However, to date City Council has allocated no funds to this project, despite requests for the last two years by the Downtown Village Development Corporation (DVDC) and Downtown Sudbury (B.I.A).
We the citizens of Greater Sudbury, believe that City Council’s financial investment in Greater Sudbury’s historic downtown village, through place making and the streetscape design initiatives, is essential in the revitalization of this community’s first neighbourhood. We feel that City Council’s financial investment will assist in the economic development of Greater Sudbury’s downtown, create a more aesthetically pleasing environment for citizens and tourists alike, and promote urban intensification. We the undersigned respectively request that Greater Sudbury’s City Council allocate 2011 budgetary funds to the Downtown Sudbury Streetscape Project.
